Summary

3。5/5Picked up due to the author himself - one of my fav from modern Scifi world。 Book itself is like a long parable, with imagination。 Not exactly scifi but that's not the point。 A simple, fast read。 I do wish it was a little more complex。 3。5/5Picked up due to the author himself - one of my fav from modern Scifi world。 Book itself is like a long parable, with imagination。 Not exactly scifi but that's not the point。 A simple, fast read。 I do wish it was a little more complex。 。。。more

An interesting story That is part of what I’d call evolutionary SF (like the master of the sub genre - Tchaikovsky) But I think there are more layers to this story … I wonder if the dinosaurs are meant to be westerners? Or large corporations? Or。。?

I really wanted to give this book a five-star review, but it was just short of amazing。 It was really good, but I think it suffered from a poor translation。 It sometimes felt clunky and the punctuation choices weren't always the best。But the satire was 💯。 I almost felt like different sections of the book were satirizing different political situations。 From US-China relations to colonialism to the Cold War to general current potential WWIII problematics。 I felt that the final chapter was a perfec I really wanted to give this book a five-star review, but it was just short of amazing。 It was really good, but I think it suffered from a poor translation。 It sometimes felt clunky and the punctuation choices weren't always the best。But the satire was 💯。 I almost felt like different sections of the book were satirizing different political situations。 From US-China relations to colonialism to the Cold War to general current potential WWIII problematics。 I felt that the final chapter was a perfect short story by itself。 You obviously need the back story, but it reads as such a perfect microcosm of political tensions。 。。。more

Great, GREAT book! A cautionary fable in the veins of “animal farm”。 This is Liu at his very best。 If you loved “the three body problem” trilogy, this book is a MUST read for you。 Why are you still reading this review? Set in the late Creatceous period, this is the story of two extremely different species co-inhabiting earth and relying heavily on each other for respective skills。 Beating the odds, these two species forge an alliance that sets a Civilisation in order, only to lose it again。 It is a light hearted take on animal instincts, codependence, disagreements, wars and chaos that ensues when religion or ego takes over sanity。 The story is told in a very uncomplicated way and that’s the strength of this b Set in the late Creatceous period, this is the story of two extremely different species co-inhabiting earth and relying heavily on each other for respective skills。 Beating the odds, these two species forge an alliance that sets a Civilisation in order, only to lose it again。 It is a light hearted take on animal instincts, codependence, disagreements, wars and chaos that ensues when religion or ego takes over sanity。 The story is told in a very uncomplicated way and that’s the strength of this book。 Recommended for short easy read。 。。。more

Very nice idea with a good execution and an interesting story。 I think this is my first contact with the writing of Liu Cixin and I had a positive impression about it。

Small novel (novella?) cute as a button, describing the rise and abrupt fall of a joint civilization of dinosaurs and ants during the late Cretaceous period。It's a pitty that the only edition available is Subterranean Press, thus only few copies at high cost。 Probably will become collectible soon。 Good for the author, bad for the readers。 Small novel (novella?) cute as a button, describing the rise and abrupt fall of a joint civilization of dinosaurs and ants during the late Cretaceous period。It's a pitty that the only edition available is Subterranean Press, thus only few copies at high cost。 Probably will become collectible soon。 Good for the author, bad for the readers。 。。。more

"And so we can assume that, through the endless night of antiquity, budding intelligences flickered on and then off again like the brief, brilliant twinkles of fireflies。"First translated into English by Holger Nahm in 2012, newly translated into English by Elizabeth Hanlon in 2020 (under the title Of Ants and Dinosaurs), and produced as an audiobook (under this title, using, I think, the Nahm translation) in December 2021, this satirical sci-fi novella is probably new to most English readers of "And so we can assume that, through the endless night of antiquity, budding intelligences flickered on and then off again like the brief, brilliant twinkles of fireflies。"First translated into English by Holger Nahm in 2012, newly translated into English by Elizabeth Hanlon in 2020 (under the title Of Ants and Dinosaurs), and produced as an audiobook (under this title, using, I think, the Nahm translation) in December 2021, this satirical sci-fi novella is probably new to most English readers of Liu, though its original publication in 2004 predates The Three-Body Problem by a couple years。 And if, like me, you're a big Three-Body fan, this factoid is pretty interesting, as one can see in this novella, as if in miniature, many of the themes that Liu would expand to such epic, universal scope in the Trilogy。 Tracing the history of the rise and fall of Ant and Dinosaur Civilization in the Cretaceous period, this novella is breezy and lighthearted (and as others have noted, great for a younger audience, whether that was intentional or not), though the subjects it satirizes are hefty, including religious wars, xenophobia, labor exploitation, ecological disaster, nuclear proliferation, and general human shortsightedness。 It reminded me of the Batrachomyomachia, or Battle of Frogs and Mice, an Ancient Greek parody epic whose comedic core is that the frog and mice societies are all too human。 That is, the point is not to seriously imagine what civilization would have been like had ants and dinosaurs, not human beings, been the evolutionary scions of language and intelligence; it's to imagine other animals behaving like humans in order to highlight humanity's endemic stupidity, making the whole affair of human civilization seem rather quaint and tragically foolish。 It's like Dr。 Strangelove with T-Rexes。 Some specific connections to the Three-Body Trilogy: (1) events told from the perspective of ants, creatures that seem to stand for the perseverance of life and civilization (cf。 beginning of The Dark Forest; (2) allegorical fairy tales that convey complex information about civilizations (cf。 Yun's fairy tales in Death's End; (3) mutually alien societies trying to outwit one another in an existential war of attrition (cf。 can't say, for spoilers); (4) suns suddenly appearing and vanishing as harbingers of doom (cf。 ditto)。 Also, having just read Kingdom of Characters by Jing Tsu, I couldn't help seeing an allegory for the development of modern Chinese script in the evolution of the dinosaur's writing system from ungainly pictographs on gigantic wooden tablets to efficient, minuscule script producible in multiple formats, thanks to the ants' technical knowhow。 As Liu writes, "Although dinosaur society had possessed a written language for a thousand years, its cultural development was painfully slow and had nearly come to a standstill in the last few centuries。 Until now。。。" Liu is clearly on the side of the language reformers and futurists that Tsu writes about。Anyways! I enjoyed this。 I don't think it's, like, an incredible work, and it doesn't rival the Three-Body Trilogy, but reading it for what it is, i。e。, a light satirical entertainment in the sci-fi mode, it's fun。 For fans of Liu's other work, definitely worth checking out。 。。。more

I really disliked the beginning of the book。 It was confusing and illogical, saying that a 30 meter building had 4 stories among others。 But, after a lot of repetitive descriptions about how small ants are and how big dinosaurs are the book becomes really interesting。 Especially the ending is well written and really pulls you in。 Too bad the epilogue was more of the same。TLDR; It feels like a good book written badly。

Liu Cixin has a great dynamic range to write about the contrast between the greatest and least of things。 This is not a short story, but an alternate history of Earth if ants and dinosaurs worked together to create civilization。 Differences between individualistic and collective cultures can be explored through contrasting the ants and dinosaurs。 In this way lessons can be applied from the story for Chinese and Western cultures to coexist for a prosperous future。

This is a fun little novella。 It feels a little like Cixin Liu writes Redwall but I'm not sure how much of that is that 100% of the characters are animals who communicate with each other using language。 However, it does still cover many of his favorite themes around civilizational growth and conflict and could be a good intro to someone who is to young or unsure if they'd like it to read his The Three Body Problem This is a fun little novella。 It feels a little like Cixin Liu writes Redwall but I'm not sure how much of that is that 100% of the characters are animals who communicate with each other using language。 However, it does still cover many of his favorite themes around civilizational growth and conflict and could be a good intro to someone who is to young or unsure if they'd like it to read his The Three Body Problem 。。。more
